Month end statistics nothing to ‘cheers’ about

31 March 2025

Drunk driving arrests by traffic officers doubled, while the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 147 assault incidents, a more than 90% increase from the previous weekend. Other incident categories also increased as has become custom at month end.

‘A complete disregard for safety, the rule of law and consideration for others have become synonymous with a payday weekend. Our officers across departments brace for this time of the month as much of the havoc can be ascribed to alcohol abuse. Everyone is happy to have extra money, but it is not a good enough reason to throw caution to the wind.

‘While we continue to plead with the public to behave responsibly, they are reminded that our enforcement staff are dedicated and at the ready to clamp down on behaviour which puts others at risk ,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Traffic officers made 39 arrests of which 30 were for driving under the influence.

They also recorded 42 565 offences, impounded 312 public transport vehicles and executed 1 367 warrants of arrest.

The PECC recorded 1 782 incidents over the weekend, including 59 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents, 61 domestic violence incidents and 245 noise nuisances.

Law Enforcement officers arrested 232 suspects and issued 7 458 notices, while Metro Police officers made 60 arrests.

Residents are reminded to report criminal activities by phoning the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone and 107 from a landline.
